Las Vegas, Nevada, Mirage Hotel & Casino

It is a sad time now that we have started our trip home, however we are going to spend 5 days in Las Vegas and meet up with some good friends in Las Vegas. We are all staying at the Mirage Casino and Hotel. See picture below. This is one of the really nice hotels, with a tropical setting, waterfalls, a volcano that erupts every half hour at night, lagoon style pool with lots of palm tress and many restaurants.

The Mirage was purchase by the MGM group and is being modernized in the format of a MGM style hotel and casino. Still a great place to stay, but more hip and up todate than what it used to be. We have found that the MGM group is a little less free with their free drinks, especially at the bars. Now you pretty much need to have $100 in a slot machine to be able to obtain free drinks while sitting at a bar. Drinks are still free at the slot machines on the floor.

We arrived on Sunday, May 14th and met our friends for supper to celebrate mother's day. Peter and Sheila are from Grand Bend and Valerie and Donny are from Ottawa. We ate at Kokomos, which is one of the best places to eat at the Mirage.

Peter and Sheila left on Monday, May 15th to return to Grand Bend and we visited with Valerie, Donny and her sister the rest of the week. Las Vegas has many places to eat, both inexpensive as well as high end. On Monday night we ate at Cravings, at the Mirage, which is their buffet. From king crab legs, to roast beef, turkey, shrimp, salads and deserts it is impossible to try everything. The food and the decor was excellent and we can highly recommend this buffet!

The Bellagio always decorates their hotel to fit with the time of the year. Since memorial day is approaching, it seemed to be the right thing to have the liberty bell on display. I left the picture of the water fountains in front of the Bellagio hotel in this page. It is really an amazing spectacle!

We stayed at the Mirage Hotel for 3 days and then moved over to the New York, New York Hotel and Casino shown below. This hotel and casino has over 3000 rooms and of course is built to resemble New York city both outside as well as inside. Inside the hotel is an area built to resemble New York city with many shops and eateries. Coney Island hot dogs to well aged Steaks can be found. They also have several bars with entertainment including Coyote Ugly and an Irish bar which is a huge attraction.

We ate at Gallagers Steak House! This is one of the famous eateries in New York and they have duplicated it at the New York Hotel in Las Vegas. We had one of the best steaks ever at this restaurant! Shown below are Sam and DeDe(Valerie's Sister and her son),Carol and Paul, Donnie and Valerie.

We had a really enjoyable time in las Vegas for the start of our trip home. The best part is that we were comp'd for the rooms at both the Mirage and the New York hotels, and I won $700, which meant that the 5 days in Vegas were effectively free. Now how good is that!

On Friday, May 19th, we leave Vegas and are heading north towards Utah and then on to Denver. Sad to leave, but it all has to end sometime!
