Extended Absence Checklists

This is a partial list of items that you should check prior to leaving for an extended absence for vacation or business travel. Whether it is a short vacation for even a few days or if you are going to be away all winter long, always make sure that a reliable person or company is looking after your home. Your insurance could be invalidated if you do not have someone routinely checking on your home! Here is our list of extended absence items:

  1. Security system armed?
  2. Automatic timers for lights,
  3. Radio turned on?
  4. Phones turned down?
  5. Arrange for neighbor to watch house, cut, water grass, give house that lived-in look?
  6. Arrange for snow removal?
  7. Call Insurance company to confirm how often house must be checked inside to maintain insurance coverage.
  8. Arrange with professional house sitter to watch over your house, if neighbors or relatives are unable to assist.

More items to consider to protect your family and your home while away on an extended absence:

  1. Shut water off at the main entrance to your home?
  2. No change in normal pattern of opening, shutting drapes, dead give-away lighting patterns?
  3. Arrange to stop mail delivery or have someone pick it up routinely?
  4. Arrange to stop newspaper delivery?
  5. Arrange for someone to pick up the fliers that are left at your home?
  6. Arrange for yard work to be performed?
  7. Arrange to have local police give "special attention" for area beat car?
